So far the tv is great. My original tv had short base so I measured the distance between the legs on the new tv which is 50 inches. I cut a board a bit longer and set it on top. The full width of the tv is 57 inches even though it’s a 65 inch tv. I’m quite impressed with the quality of the picture and the sound . I have a blue tooth sound bar though. I installed it alone with little effort. Lighter then I though it was going to be.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to try this TCL flat screen 43″ smart tv. Going from a regular flat screen that I needed a roku to make it a smart tv, this has been a bit of a learning curve for me.
I have been testing this tv for over a month now. Had I reviewed this tv in the first week or so, it would have been a negative review. However with the help of customer service, which has been quick, helpful and courteous.

So, first set-up was pretty easy, you just need to follow the prompts on the screen. If you have an amazon account you will be prompted to entire your account information, same for netflix, etc.
When first turning the tv on, you will land on the smart tv dashboard which offers some live tv channels and will show the apps that you can install (both free and paid apps). Using the remote, you can select Prime video, Netflix, TCL channel, etc. By pressing the app button on the remote, you can download hundreds of different app which offer movies, sports, comedy and kids channels.
You can also use the remote to switch between the smart tv and satellite or cable tv if you have it.

The negative experience that I encountered was, according to customer service, an app that wasn’t downloaded properly which caused the tv to come on in the middle of the night at top volume. Now, let me tell you, when a tv comes on in the middle of the night at top volume, that is a very startling experience. Not only did this happen once, it happened twice in one night. The following night the same thing happened. After that, I started unplugging the tv when going to bed. After contacting customer service, they advised what they thought the problem was and that I should factory reset the tv. I did that and went through the whole set up process again, downloaded only the netflix and TCL channel apps. Since then, I have not had a problem with this tv.

Remember, I went from an old (like 15 year old) flat screen tv to this smart tv from TCL. What I like about this tv is the picture quality, although it did take some adjustment on our part as everything looks so real now instead of flat, if you understand what I mean. I like the sound quality, it is far superior to my old tv. I like the option/ability to download apps for free watching, just keep in mind that all the free apps have commercials which can be frequent and long.
Keep in mind that you need to plug an Ethernet cable into the back of this tv to make it a smart tv. Without the ethernet cable you can only use this tv as a regular tv for cable or satellite. There is a built in tuner that can scan for over air channels, however where I am, none were found (I wasn’t surprised).

A couple things I don’t like. I am not a fan of the remote, it feels far too flimsy to last very long. When arrowing through the menus, there is a click every single time and there is no way to turn this off. Not really a big deal, but when my husband is clicking through hundreds of movies, the clicking sound gets really annoying. I am also not a fan of the legs on this tv, I feel they are too far apart and could be a little higher.

I am sure there are others features this tv offers but they are features that I have yet to investigate such as voice command. This tv also works with Alexa however I do not have that so I can’t review that option.

After the past 5 weeks, I can now say I that I am happy with this tv and I would have no problem purchasing another tv from this brand.

    What’s Included:
    – TV, 2 x legs/feet, 4 x screws for leg/feet installation, remote, 2 x AAA batteries, power cord & a quick start guide/user manual.

    First Impressions:
    – Unable to locate this exact model on the TCL website.
    – The packaging inside the TV box is pretty good with a solid piece of cardboard with foam lining in front of the screen to provide impact resistance.
    – The TV has a very thin steel bezel around the edge for an almost bezel-less look.
    – Has 3 HDMI, 1 x Composite, 1 x 3.5mm headphone jack, 1 x optical output & 1 x LAN port.
    – The power button is located on the bottom center of the screen.
    – Manual doesn’t provide a lot of information, just how to install the legs and some basic info on the buttons on the remote.
    – Power plug is a standard figure 8 connector, so it should be easy to replace if needed.
    – There are two speakers are on the underside of the TV that provides down firing audio.

    Measurements:
    – The screen is physically larger than my existing 50” TV measuring approx. 43.75” wide x 25” tall x 2.75” thick/deep (TV only), 27.25” tall x 10.25” deep (with stand/legs installed).
    – The legs are placed near the outer edges of the screen and is fairly low profile, so it doesn’t provide a lot of clearance at only 1.75”. It has an angled footprint spaced approx. 37.5” wide at the front and 33” at the rear.
    – Uses a standard VESA 200mm x 200mm mount points for easy compatibility.
    – The screen has a viewable area of 43.25” wide x 24.25” tall (approx. 49.5” viewable diagonally).
    – The display when powered on has a 5mm border around the sides and top of the screen.
    – Because of the short legs, I needed to design, and 3D print a set of risers so it would clear my sound bar.

    Setup:
On initial boot up, it does take a few mins to go through the boot process before setup can start. Since it was connected to the internet via LAN cable, it found updates and installed immediately.

Setup of the TV functions is very Amazon heavy. You have an option to log in with an account, which will give you full access to apps and features, or you can go the basic route without the need for an account, but you’re limited to 6 apps and that’s it.

I went with the Basic setup and found I was able to access things like Netflix and YouTube, and you can install additional apps, but you’re unable to use the apps without singing into your Amazon account.
Since I was limited, I logged in and it registered the device with my Amazon account. This provided access to all the apps and made them accessible to watch TV/movies.

There is a built-in ATSC tuner so it’s capable of scanning for digital over-the-air channels, so a cable subscription is not needed. It was able to find approx. 56 channels where I’m located.

    Performance:
TV power on, after everything is setup, starts up fairly fast. It takes approx. 2secs from the press of the power button to when you can start moving around on the main menu. It does take a few more seconds for the sound system to kick in, but significantly less time than my old TV.

Opening system menus and movement around the main menu are very responsive but opening apps do tend to be a bit slower. Same goes for loading a movie/show after the app has been opened.

Comparing with my Roku Ultra streaming device and opening the same Pluto TV app, it’s significantly faster on the Roku than the TV.

Switching to the Live TV mode to watch over-the-air broadcasts and changing channels, it takes quite a bit of time vs my old TV. I’m not sure, but it seems the live over-the-air video feed needs to go through processing before it’s displayed, so you don’t really get a standard TV experience. I sometimes like to channel surf, but the delays make it a “painful” process.

When watching videos, whether it be Live TV or through any of the apps, I did not see any stuttering of the videos.

I however did see a delay in the subtitles when watching a movie on the Prime Video app, but this may be limited to that specific movie as switching to a TV series on Prime Video had no issues with subtitles.

    Video Quality:
This is my first 4K TV as I’ve been running the same 1080p TV for the last decade, so I found the display to be sharper. The backlighting is bright and even and doesn’t have any hotspots or light bleed from the edges. I also found the screen displayed black a lot better as well.

When watching videos through the Prime Video app, depending on the movie/show, it was able to stream 4K automatically. Although the video was very sharp, I didn’t like the motion processing that was performed as it made the way everything moved look fake. It took a bit of finding, but Motion Processing can be reduced or disabled by going into the Settings -> Display -> Advanced and adjust the setting accordingly. I disabled the feature, and it made the viewing experience for me significantly better. I did find watching 1080p videos from my computer on the TV also looked sharper.

One area I found where it wasn’t the best was through the Live TV watching over-the-air broadcasts. Watching shows on a specific channel on my original TV looked fine, but on the TCL, it looked grainy like it was highly compressed and also lacked sharpness around the edges. Even with the display settings adjusted and even disabled, it did not help the quality. Now, this doesn’t happen with all channels, but this is the one I watch the most.

The TV also has a USB port on the back that allows you to connect your drive to the TV to play videos directly. It capable of playing 2160p video and supports the newer MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) codecs in MKV format without issue, that’s if your drive is fast enough to load the large bitrate videos, otherwise it will be a bit jerky when playing. There was also an issue with subtitles. It will play the default/first subtitle, but unfortunately, there’s no option to change it using the built-in media player, so you’ll need to install a 3rd party player that supports the option. If for any reason the player is stopped, exit to the main menu, switch modes (Live TV), hit the back button, jump to another video or turn off the TV, the media player does not remember your position, so you’ll have to fast forward until you reach the approximate time on the video.

    Audio Quality:
Using the built-in speakers, the audio was actually better than expected. It has different sounds modes and an EQ to allow you to adjust the settings to your liking. With Bass & Treble maxed out, the volume and quality sounded ok.

I tried hooking up my Sony sound base but struggled to get any audio through to the sound system. After spending a few hours, I ended up changing from optical/HDMI sound to Bluetooth audio. This was fairly easy to setup and sync. The audio settings for the TV actually has a Bluetooth sync setting to adjust for any delays common with Bluetooth. This was a great option to have as Bluetooth is known to have audio sync issues.

I did notice an issue with this. If I set the audio level to 20 and & the sound system to level 15 and everything is fine, I power off the TV (which powers off the sound system as well), and power on the TV later to continue watching, I found the volume level exceptionally low. If I increase the volume, the TV is now at 50% in order to get it back to the same level as before (sound system still at level 15). Not sure if this is a problem with the sound system or TV.

I finally fixed the audio issue via optical and found it was a bad HDMI cable, or a cable that didn’t meet the ARC/eARC standard. Once the cable was changed and a few settings adjusted, audio was flowing through my sound system again. Volume of the sound system is now sync’d so I can adjust the volume using the TV remote. Audio levels are now consistent, so when the TV/sound system is set at level 20 and powered off and back on, it’s still at level 20 and sounds the same.

    Pros:
    – Excellent padding in the box to protect the screen from impacts.
    – Clean screen providing consistent light output, no bright spots or light bleed from the edges.
    – Fairly thin and light.
    – Fire TV (Android) is the main OS/interface that provides you easy access to multiple streaming services as well as Live TV. This eliminates the need to have multiple devices connected to your TV.
    – Opening the Live TV guide from the main menu loads all live TV channels from all your selected streaming services, for a more seamless experience.
    – Built-in speakers produce better audio than expected for such a thin TV. You can also adjust the Bass/Treble & EQ settings for better audio.
    – Supports 802.11ac (2.4GHz & 5GHz bands).
    – Built-in media player that can play the latest MKV video files with the H.265 codec.
    – The higher pixel density makes watching 1080p videos on the TV significantly sharper.
    – Light colours are brighter and darks are darker.
    – Watching 1080p videos from streaming apps or from a connected computer look clearer/sharper.

    Cons:
    – Audio through the sound system doesn’t seem as loud as it was when using my old TV. Not sure if it’s the auto-detection of Dolby and it’s switching modes, but I tend to have to increase the volume more than I used to in order to match the volume level I’m familiar with.
    – Doesn’t have a screen off (Audio Only) function so I can still have the TV running with audio while the screen is not displaying anything. I do this a lot when I’m doing something but still want to hear my show.
    – The menus in settings don’t loop, meaning once you reach the bottom setting it doesn’t loop back to the top, so there’s a lot of button pressing to get back to the top or bottom. This may reduce lifespan of the remote. A touchpad may have helped with scrolling in the menus.
    – Not a fan of the remote layout vs the remote from my old TV, lacks buttons and is super long.
    – Live TV with over-the-air broadcasts all seem to be processed by the TV before displaying, so it loads fairly slow when changing channels and some channels/broadcasts looks overly compressed and lacks sharpness. The slow channel changes are not ideal for channel surfers who like to change channels to see what’s on, so the channel guide may be the only option.
    – I’m not a fan of the feet/stand design as it requires a table/surface that’s wide enough to fit the spaced-out legs. Something more central, like a base vs feet would have been ideal.
    – My old TV had a way to check on the exact signal strength of the over-the-air channel so I can adjust my antenna for max strength, unfortunately, this TV doesn’t have that feature (or I can’t find it).
    – Loading apps can be a bit slow.
    – The 50Q651F model is strangely not located on the TCL website.
    – No option to adjust screen size/format. Watching movies and HD stuff on the streaming apps will show the proper 16:9 ratios but watching live broadcast TV that is not HD will cause the screen to auto zoom to fit the screen, which can cause it to be zoomed in and some parts cutoff.
    – The remote is a bit quirky when adjusting the volume as it sometimes will jump it up/down by 2 levels when you only what 1. Also, it doesn’t always power on/off my sound system via the ARC/eARC HDMI connection.
    – Volume sometimes doesn’t work on Live TV when I power on the TV. I need to change channel for audio to work.

    Final Impression:
Overall, the TCL 50Q651F 4K TV worked very well. It has a lot of features/settings you wouldn’t expect in a TV. The FireTV OS provides easy access to a lot of streaming services, both paid and free, so you can watch almost anything without needing separate streaming devices. There were some quirks and missing features that I’m used to which would have made the TV better, so hopefully they’ll become available on the next firmware update.

At the time of this review, the TV was priced at $499.99.
