Ryan Waddell –
Pros: I’m building my first PC in 20 years (for my 13yo son, who is getting into PC gaming) and yeah… Things have REALLY changed in the last 20 years. But this MSI motherboard made it an absolute breeze. Everything is clearly labeled and well placed, getting everything plugged in and connected was super straightforward. Build quality really feels outstanding. Plenty of connectors for all your fan/RGB needs, and while this isn’t super important, it really looks great too! Cons: My only complaint is that the paper documentation provided with the motherboard was pretty scant. The PDF manual is great detail, but for the amount you’re paying for this bad boy a hard copy of the manual would have been appreciated. Overall Review: – Great performance
– Lots of connectors/functionality
– Ease of install
– Looks good

Pros: Unlike other B650 mobos this one had no issues booting with a 7700X and 32GB of GSskill 5600 DDR5 RAM. Rock solid running PBO Mode 3 with CPU max temp capped at 90c. Cons: Had an issue with my MSI 4090 Suprim Liquid with shipping mobo BIOS, 4090 was stuck at PCIe Gen 1.0 instead of Gen 4 speed. I put in a ticket with MSI and in less than 24hs they provided me with BIOS ver 1.11 that took care of the issue. Excellent service by MSI here.
Only gripe is the price, B650 mobos should be less pricey than they currently are. Overall Review: I would recommend this mobo without reserve.

Pros: A million and one headers, connect whatever you want. Cons: Maybe one more usbc port. Its the new standard we should be seeing it in modern builds. Overall Review: Fantastic board, Ill recommend to anyone who wants to go a little extra for a quality mobo
Familyman_19 –
Pros: Lots of IO connectivity.
Solid construction, heavy
Lots of heatsinks Cons: AM5 motherboards are a bit pricey.
No rear clear CMOS button. Overall Review: I really wish this motherboard had all of the features of the B650 Carbon model, but was just white/silver in color, but so far it is doing everything I need it to.

Pros: Great board for the money. Supports 192GB RAM. Cons: Doesn’t post without multiple BIOS flashes. MSI should include an instruction card telling you what to do. There’s no manual with the board, and nothing online suggests you have to flash the BIOS. Overall Review: It’s a great board for the money. I docked one star because the board won’t post with *approved* 48GB RAM sticks. There’s no instructions with the board. I eventually figured out I needed to do a BIOS upgrade using the Flash button, which took 3 attempts before it worked. First attempt failed because the board only recognizes FAT32 file system. Second attempt the board would POST, but then I got no video. The board finally posted when I flashed the BIOS for a third time.
Anyway, it’s running great with 192GB RAM and a 7950X. This is a beast of a desktop machine.

Pros: I like the variety of M.2 ports and how easy installation was. The whole installation process was very easy, and despite what I read on other forums, the WIFI setup was a breeze. I was already familiar with MSI’s bios options, setup, etc. Everything was a breeze. 3 months in, I’m very pleased. Cons: I had no issues with this product. Overall Review: Yes, this was a good compromise of features, speed, and price.
Engineer Fixes Power Shutdown –
Pros: It functions normally after a BIOS update. Cons: The motherboard has a simple hardware issue on the power shutdown signal that I had to fix myself. See the detailed review below. Overall Review: Great board now that it works. When first turned on there were 2 error lights on, red (cpu) and yellow (RAM). Time to get the latest BIOS from msi. Renamed the downloaded and unzipped BIOS file to msi.rom and then put it on a FAT32 formatted 32GB max USB stick. Plugged into FlashBack USB port and pushed the flashback BIOS button. About 5 minutes later the computer booted itself into the BIOS menu. Installed Win 11 ok.
Problem with shutdown. SOLVED – The short version of the story. The computer would not fully shut down. It turned out to be a simple analog issue with the PSON# (pin 16) on the motherboard side of the 24-pin power connector. The motherboard was not letting it be pulled back to +5V so the power supply couldn’t turn off. Fixed by adding a 560 ohm 0.25 watt leaded resistor between PSON# and the always on +5V called +5VSB (pin 9) of the 24-pin connector. The mod was done be removing some of the insulation on the power cable and soldering the 560 ohm resistor between those 2 pins (at the wires). This completely fixed the issue. It would now also startup properly with the normal power button. (no yellow LED RAM failure)
The longer explanation. It was a mystery why the computer fans and lights would stay on after a full shutdown was done from windows. After pressing the start button, in this failed shutdown condition, the yellow (RAM) error light would come on. I ran a RAM check with memtest. It was 100 percent ok. I used a different power supply. No luck. I called customer service and was told that the RAM may be bad. It wasn’t. All this time I was using a meter to monitor the AC power consumption. In the failed shutdown state it was drawing about 10 watts. Only using the AC power switch would shut down the computer. After restoring AC power the PSON# pin would go high to +5V. Pressing the power button made PSON# go to 0V and the computer started normally. If after a failed shutdown, the 24-pin power connector was unplugged, the power supply would shut down. Something on the motherboard was holding the PSON# signal low. After a failed shutdown pulling PSON# lightly up to +5VSB with a 1k resistor would move the signal on PSON# up to about +0.25V. Momentarily adding another 1k in parallel with it caused PSON# to snap high to 5V and the computer shut down ok. The AC power was now less than 0.3W. So the shutdown circuit on the motherboard had some excessive hysteresis prior to the modification. This may be a design issue or a wrong part production issue. The board was not tested.

Pros: – Great value for money
– Reliable WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity
– Simple to set up
– Room to grow Cons: – Ships with an out-of-date BIOS (Dec 2023) that refuses to recognize any SSD in the second M.2 slot. Remember to update the BIOS to the latest version.
– Booting the mobo takes about 5-10 seconds Overall Review: All around great motherboard. Youre getting all the essentials and room to grow for a great price. Just attach your peripherals (including the wifi antennas) and boot it up. I installed Windows via USB stick and everything came to life within the hour. Bluetooth and wifi connections are very reliable.
The latest MSI BIOS looks sleek and easy to understand. My mobo was shipped with the December 2023 BIOS, which bizarrely doesn’t recognize any NVME SSDs you mount in the second M.2 slot. Updating the BIOS to the latest version (March 2024 at the time of writing) resolves this weird issue.
The MSI B650 Gaming Plus doesnt show an appreciable difference from the MSI Pro B650-S other than the heat sinks being just a little bit bigger.
If your boot time is longer than expected, consider reseating the CPU as that resolved it for me.
