I really like this new model Echo Dot. I had an older one and always liked it but thought I’d try out the newer version as I’ve since got some different devices and have upgraded to smart features in various home functionality. This works like a charm.
It is very responsive to voice commands even from a distance, and it interacts with smart appliances and outlets and such very quickly and accurately. I am probably considered a bit tech challenged but even I didn’t have any problem following the instructions to pair this Dot with various devices — it was pretty straightforward and worked as it is supposed to the first time; I didn’t have to start over again and again like I have to do with other things in the past. That made me very happy indeed.
The quality of the sound is a lot better than in the older version, even though I didn’t mind the old one — it’s the kind of thing that you didn’t realize what you were missing until you got the new one. Haha. This one really is a cut above the older version for sure.
I am very pleased with this Echo Dot and I’m looking forward to adding even more to its repertoire.

The Echo dot is a good buy. The sound quality is surprisingly decent for the price, and it works great with my other Alexa speakers. Easy to set up speaker groups to play music throughout the house.
One of my favorite features is being able to play Audible books while I’m working around the house. I also use it all the time as a kitchen timer. It’s super convenient and just makes life a bit easier.
Overall, a great little smart speaker that does more than you’d expect for the size and price.

Love these speakers. Have two one for each side of my bed to create a stereo pair. The only thing I would say and have removed one star is that I wish they were able to be casted to from other apps. As they are right now if you have a stereo pair setup you can only cast music and stuff from Amazon based apps unfortunately. I can’t cast my audiobook to both speakers, only one which is really disappointing. Other than that they have amazing sound quality and I would highly recommend. They’re really cute too!

The Echo Dot continues to be Amazon’s most popular and affordable smart speaker The New Gen 5 speaker looks identical to the Gen 4 version however there are some key features inside that may be important to you and you should know about before purchasing.
••• Design & Size •••
This new Echo Dot Gen 5 speaker is the exactly the same size as the previous Gen 4 Speaker
100mm x 100mm x 89mm.
Both speakers share the same spherical design and are about the size of a softball. (I’m not a big fan of the baseball shape but it looks like it’s here to stay for at least another generation).
The new Gen 5 Speaker is noticeably heavier than the Gen 4 thanks to the new speaker and electronics inside

The Gen 5 Dot has a New High Excursion, Full Range Speaker inside, along with an Accelerometer and temperature sensor.
••• Sound Quality •••
Amazon claims the New Echo Dot Gen 5 has twice (2x) the bass and 50% less distortion. I would agree that the new Gen 5 dot does have slightly more bass and marginally less distortion but the differences are subtle and certainly not jaw dropping.
The Gen 5 Dot continues to compress heavy bass to enable the 44.9mm full range driver to handle the lower frequencies. Compression increases the louder you turn the volume up and distortion is reduced slightly. You still can’t turn the volume up past 75% before the distortion is too much.
The Echo Dot was intended to be a convenient, compact, inexpensive smart speaker … If you’re looking for better sound for music and streaming consider upgrading to the full size Echo Speaker or Echo Studio Gen 2.
••• NEW FEATURES •••
Temperature Sensor:
Both models have a temperature sensor installed which can be used to trigger home automation devices and Alexa routines. So for example you could turn a fan on when the temperature gets hot
New – Accelerometer:
The Echo Dot now supports tap gestures thanks to a new accelerometer inside. You can tap the top of the dot to pause and resume music, end a call or dismiss a timer or alarm. Some users prefer tap gestures rather than voice commands. Tapping is also better in the bedroom for example rather than using your voice to cancel the alarm and wake up your partner.
New Processor:
The Gen 5 Dot has a new AZ2 Neural Edge processor inside. This makes the New Echo Dot faster and more responsive. Many commands are processed locally on the device itself rather than in the cloud. The new processor also provides more power for audio processing.
Echo Dot with Clock:
The echo dot with clock has a brand new 5×21 high density LED display which is both brighter and easier to read. The Echo Dot Gen 5 with clock will display the time and date just like the Gen 4 but will also display the name of a song, artist, the weather, a calculator and more.
The Echo Dot Gen 5 with clock is currently $20 more than the Echo Show 5. The Echo Show 5 has a video screen which makes it an excellent alarm clock and more. The Echo Show 5 sounds as good as the Echo Dot with Clock making the Show a better deal if you want an alarm clock Smart Speaker.
No More 3.5MM Jack:
The 3.5mm audio output jack has been removed from the New Echo Gen 5 Dot. If you need a hardwired audio out jack you will want to get the Gen 4 Dot. The New Gen 5 Dot only supports wireless bluetooth there is no hardwired output option.
••• RECOMMENDATION •••
The differences between the EchoDot Gen 4 and Gen 5 from an audio perspective are minor and not worth paying a premium for. Even with the new speaker larger speaker most users will not notice the difference and have a similar experience with either speaker.
The Gen 4 Dot will quickly become a heavily discounted speaker so watch for it on Black Friday, Boxing Day, Prime Days and Deal of the Days while stock lasts.
While the Gen 4 Dot will inevitably be cheaper there are some reasons you may with to purchase the Echo Gen 5 now.
The display and features of the Gen 5 Dot with CLOCK are much better than the previous GEN 4 and well worth it. I do not recommend buying the Gen 4 Dot with clock anymore … Get the Gen 5 Clock Dot or Echo Show 5 instead if you want a Smart Speaker Clock.
Another reason to get the new Gen 5 Dot is for the Accelerometer which enables tap and touch controls. These are very convenient and handy.
If you’re just using the Echo Dot as a smart assistant and for background music then pick up the Gen 4 Dot when it’s on sale.
If you’re using your Echo devices for home automation or value the tap controls then the Gen 5 Dot is the one to get.
